In its 18th consecutive year, Virgo’s SupplySide West Global Expo & Conference grew its attendance 9 percent at its new venue at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Taking place Oct. 6-10, the show attracted nearly 13,000 suppliers and finished product manufacturers with new ideas, scientific advancements and strategies. Additionally, the show floor boasted more than 1,700 booths offering more than 10,000 ingredients, technologies and services.

The following are some of the highlights from the beverage ingredient suppliers that exhibited at the show:

Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM), Chicago, offered samples of a vanilla-flavored dairy alternative featuring its Clarisoy 170 isolates soy protein, as well as an orange juice featuring its CardioAid plant sterols. The joint venture between ADM, Matsutani Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. and Matsutani America Inc. also promoted its Fibersol line of soluble dietary fibers, including Fibersol-2 and Fibersol-2AG, Fibersol-LQ and Fibersol-HS.

AIBMR Life Sciences, Puyallup, Wash., highlighted its expertise in regulatory and scientific consulting.

AIDP, City of Industry, Calif., offered samples of an iced coffee featuring its Magtein brain health ingredient, which now is generally recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Ajinomoto North America, Itasca, Ill., showcased its new Advantame sweetener, which recently was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as safe for use as a general-purpose sweetener and flavor enhancer in food. The company also promoted its tannic acid, Synac’Ox polyphenols and AjiPure amino acids.

Aloecorp, Seattle, highlighted its ActivAloe Qmatrix processing, which features a patented method of polysaccharide preservation; a patented method of manufacturing aloe vera; proprietary rapid high-throughput processes; and a patented low-temperature short-time drying process that has been proven to retain heat-sensitive nutritional and functional aloe components, the company says.

Arla Foods Ingredients Inc., Basking Ridge, N.J., highlighted its Lacprodan Hydro365 whey protein, which offers faster absorption and faster recovery; Lacprodan DI-7017 whey protein concentrate, which offers satiety for cloudy beverages; and Lacprodan DI-9213 whey protein isolate, suited for clear beverages.

BASF, Florham Park, N.J., offered samples of a “Fear of Getting Older” tropical drink, which featured omega-3s, antioxidants and vitamins, and a chocolate “recovery” milk, featuring Tonalin CLA, protein, calcium and vitamin D.

Beneo Inc., Morris Plains, N.J., highlighted its Palatinose low-glycemic sweetener, which is ideal for fruit juice drinks, malt beverages, near waters, powder-based drinks and sports and energy drinks, the company says.

BI Nutraceuticals, Long Beach, Calif., stressed the importance of clean labels by sampling two prototype beverages at the show. A beet and berry lemonade featured the BI Antioxidant Blend, which includes acai powder extract, beet root powder, blueberry powder extract, cranberry powder and pomegranate powder extract. A pineapple coconut water featured the BI Energy Blend, which includes green tea powder extract, guayusa powder and yerba mate powder.

Bioenergy Life Science Inc., Ham Lake, Minn., highlighted its Bioenergy Ribose brand of D-Ribose. According to the company, ribose offers functional benefits for energy, muscle recovery, physical performance, metabolic stress and quality of life.

Biothera, Eagan, Minn., offered samples of kids drinks featuring Wellmune for immune health.

Blue California, Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., highlighted its stress-reducing L-Tea Active ingredient, made with natural L-theanine 98 percent. It also promoted its Good & Sweet natural stevia extract, made with Reb A 99 percent, and SolQ10Blue water-soluble coenzyme Q10.

Cargill, Minneapolis, highlighted its Treha trehalose, which is ideal for masking off-notes from collagen found in beauty beverages. It also showcased its ViaTech stevia-based sweeteners through samples of a chocolate milk and peach tea.

Century Foods, Sparta, Wis., promoted its capabilities in contract packaging ready-to-drink beverages with electrolytes and protein ingredients.

Chr. Hansen, Milwaukee, promoted its probiotic products for infants, children and adults at the show.

Ciranda, Hudson, Wis., showcased its tapioca syrup, used to add body and sweetness to beverages.

ColorMaker, Anaheim, Calif., highlighted its portfolio of custom natural color blending and select U.S. food color additives.

Dairy Farmers of America, Kansas City, Mo., promoted its retort technology for shelf-stable coffees, energy drinks, coconut waters, nutritional drinks, weight-loss beverages and protein shakes.

David Michael & Co., Philadelphia, offered samples of a peaberry coffee cola energy shot, highlighting the company’s natural Peaberry Coffee Type flavor, natural cola flavor WONF and Sweetness Advantage natural flavor.

DSM, Parsippany, N.J., showcased solutions to help consumers get the key nutrients that they are missing. For instance, the company offered samples of drinks specifically formulated for men and women. It also showcased its Fruitflow tomato concentrate, which can help improve circulation, the company says.

Flavorchem, Downers Grove, Ill., showcased its masking ingredients for functional and wellness applications.

Flavor Producers, Valencia, Calif., showcased the trend toward clean labels with its new Is?z plant essences and extracts; TrüBrüz tea and coffee essences and extracts; Peelz dehydrated citrus peel flavoring system; and Emulz emulsion technology for flavor delivery.

Food Ingredient Solutions LLC, Teterboro, N.J., highlighted its all-natural line of colors, including its newest spirulina, lycopene and turmeric.

FutureCeuticals Inc., Momence, Ill., showcased its all-natural Dermaval ingredient, designed to help reduce elastase activity in the body, thereby improving skin elasticity. The ingredient was specifically formulated for beauty-from-within and healthy aging products, the company says.

Ganeden Biotech, Cleveland, Ohio, announced its 18th published study for its GanedenBC30 probiotic, which demonstrated that the probiotic supports both digestive and immune health in HIV subjects.

Gelita USA, Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, highlighted its portfolio of gelatins, collagen peptides under the umbrella of protein. It also showcased its Peptiplus ingredient, which can help increase muscle mass and decrease fat mass, the company says. Additionally, it offers Fortibone for bone health, Fortigel for joint health and Verisol for skin health.

Glanbia Nutritionals, Carlsbad, Calif., highlighted its Igniter amino release matrix, which improves the digestibility of whey protein and helps to grow or maintain muscle mass, the company says.

GNT USA Inc., Tarrytown, N.Y., offered samples of spiced guava punch and pineapple cardamom lassi beverages to showcase its Exberry natural colors.

Gold Coast Ingredients, Commerce, Calif., showcased its line of natural and organic flavors and colors.

Hilmar Ingredients, Hilmar, Calif., promoted its portfolio of whey proteins, including its whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and whey protein hydrolysate.  

Ingredion Inc., Westchester, Ill., offered samples of a coconut water pineapple juice beverage featuring its Dolcerra sweetness and texture system.  

InterHealth Nutraceuticals Inc., Benicia, Calif., highlighted its Super CitriMax ingredient, featuring garcinia cambogia, for weight loss and satiety.

Jungbunzlauer, Newton Centre, Mass., offered samples of a recovery drink fortified with minerals including potassium and zinc. It also highlighted its erythritol and erythritol/stevia blend sweeteners.  

Kyowa Hakko USA Inc., New York, announced the latest research regarding its Setra glutathione. A new published study shows that Setria glutathione supplementation effectively increases the body’s stores of glutathione and supports the immune system.

Nutegrity, Irvine, Calif., promoted its new, patented Oceans Omega microemulsion solution for omega-3s, which protects and stabilizes EPA, DHA and DPA omega-3s from the inside out, it says. It also recently added whey protein isolates to its line, which already included rBGH-free and goat 80 percent whey protein concentrate.

NutraGenesis LLC, Brattleboro, Vt., offered samples of a cherry-pomegranate-flavored water with Synetrim CQ for weight loss. It also featured samples of a peach-mango-flavored green tea with WellBody 365 for immune health and stress reduction, as well as a raspberry-flavored water with Orisett for blood sugar management.

Ottens Flavors, Philadelphia, showcased trendy beverage flavors by offering samples of a pineapple-kiwi-chia drink and strawberry-basil-aloe vera drink.

PAT Vitamins Inc., La Verne, Calif., showcased its portfolio of vitamins, sweeteners, amino acids and soy protein isolates and noted its interest in the sports nutrition segment.

Penford Food Ingredients, a division of Penford Corp., Centennial, Colo., showcased its new GumPlete blend of starches and gums, which can improve texture and allow for a clean flavor release more effectively than using an individual gum or starch independently, the company says. This launch capitalizes on the company’s recent acquisition of Gum Technology.

Pom Wonderful, Los Angeles, highlighted its Pomx pomegranate extracts in both powdered and liquid formats.  

San Joaquin Valley Concentrates, Fresno, Calif., showcased its line of natural anthocyanin colors. It also promoted its ActiVin grape seed extract for food and beverages.  

Sensory Effects, Bridgeton, Mo., offered samples of a low-calorie chocolate milk, high-protein peaches-and-cream beverage, and low-calorie oatmeal cookie beverage. The chocolate milk featured the company’s VitaCholine CCL choline and cocoa creamer; the peaches-and-cream beverage featured the company’s peach juice base, Vital Blend 40 percent protein creamer and VitaCholine CCL choline; and the oatmeal cookie beverage featured the company’s oatmeal cookie powder beverage base, among other ingredients.

Solazyme, South San Francisco, Calif., demonstrated its AlgaVia whole algal protein powder, which fortifies beverages with protein, and AlgaVia lipid powder, which adds unique taste, texture and nutrition benefits to beverages.

Synergy Flavors, Wauconda, Ill., highlighted its portfolio of flavors, extracts and essences.

Taiyo International Inc., Minneapolis, highlighted its Suntheanine L-theanine ingredient, which can help improve focus, attention and clarity; reduce the negative effects of caffeine; improve the quality of sleep; and promote a calming, relaxing experience, the company says. It also promoted its SunActive iron, SunAmla superfruits, Sunfiber invisible fiber and Sunphenon green tea ingredients.

Tate & Lyle, Decatur, Ill., offered samples of a blackberry-peach-flavored juice drink made with its Tasteva stevia sweetener and PromOat beta glucan. It also highlighted its Proatein oat protein for use in meal-replacement shakes.

The Wright Group, Crowley, La., offered samples of strawberry-flavored and chocolate-flavored beverages fortified with essential omega-3 fatty acids.

TIC Gums, White Marsh, Md., highlighted its Ticaloid Pro line of hydrocolloids for ready-to-drink protein drinks.

Clifton, N.J.-based Triarco Industries, an Innophos company, showcased its Aminogen ingredient, which can increase key measures of protein absorption when added to whey protein. It also highlighted its Carbogen enzyme system that helps to boost glucose levels and increase energy and endurance during exercise, the company says.

SupplySide West 2015 will take place Oct. 5-9 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
