United Foods International (USA) Inc. now offers Japan-based Chlorella Industry Co. Ltd.’s chlorella ingredients, which are available in powder, tablet and micro-powder formats. Chlorella is a freshwater green algae that contains several nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, effective minerals, essential fatty acids and dietary fiber, and has been consumed in Japan for more than 50 years, the company says. The algae also contains chlorophyll for algal photosynthesis and carotenoids, such as beta-carotene and lutein, it adds. The amino acid score of chlorella is estimated at 88, higher than that of soybeans, it says. Studies have found that the ingredient can help improve cholesterol metabolism and detoxes harmful substances, according to the company. In addition to its nutritional value, chlorella can be used for color and produces a stronger green than green tea powder, it says.
