Beck Automation AG developed a high-performance single-serve capsule in-mold labeling (IML) machine to North America manufacturers. The new solution features visually appealing and biocompatible polylactide (PLA) packaging and ultra-lightweight parts in injection molding, the company says. IML, when combined with PLA material, offers a new way to reposition disposable coffee capsules as well as the ability to enhance the appearance of the product, the company says. A synthetic polymer, PLA is obtained from renewable sources, such as corn starch, which helps companies more easily achieve sustainability, while its low moisture absorption ensures easier storage and high UV resistance, it adds. A PLA injection solution with IML decoration offers high surface hardness, rigidity, and tensile strength, saving resources and giving the disposable coffee capsule a more premium, luxurious look, it notes.
