Portland, Ore.-based Boyd Coffee Co. is launching a new generation of single-serve coffees for single-cup coffee brewers. The new Boyd’s Coffee cups' soft mesh filters use less packaging than the traditional rigid-side cups and also enable coffee drinkers to smell the coffees’ fresh-roasted aromas, the company says.

"We are launching the next generation of the single-cup coffee experience because we believe everyone deserves a great cup of coffee," said Jeffrey Newman, president and chief executive officer of Boyd Coffee, in a statement. "We looked at other product designs in the single-cup category and knew that we could offer a vastly better coffee experience with a design that minimizes waste."

The Boyd’s Coffee single-serve coffees are available in a variety of roast levels and include organic and Rainforest Alliance Certified options. The following varietals are included in the lineup: French No. 6, Red Wagon Organic Coffee, Good Morning, Hi-Rev with extra caffeine, and Lost Lake Decaf Organic Coffee.

For home brewing, Boyd's Coffee is offering a 12-count carton with a Fresh Lock inner foil bag that seals in freshness. Grocers, including select Albertsons and Roth's Fresh Markets, will carry the 12-count retail packages. A 20-count carton with individually wrapped cups also will be available for office coffee, restaurants and other foodservice businesses.

Popularity of the single-cup format is growing among consumers, with single-cup coffee sales now accounting for more than a quarter of every dollar Americans spend on coffee to drink at home, according to Chicago-based Mintel. The market research firm predicts that by 2018, consumers will spend nearly as much on coffee pods as they do on bulk coffee.

The single-cup coffee format also is growing in foodservice operations, including restaurants, hotels, convenience stores and office coffee, Boyd Coffee notes.

"While most of our business partners will continue to brew Boyd's Coffee the traditional way, adding a single-cup option gives them greater flexibility and profitability,” Newman said in a statement. “For example, a restaurant owner might brew a single cup of decaf during a slower day part for the freshest cup of coffee with the least amount of waste.”
