Commitment to coffee remains strong among Americans
National Coffee Association reveals findings from new report

The National Coffee Association of U.S.A. Inc., New York, (NCA), reports that coffee consumption remains strong among Americans. More American adults (66%) are drinking coffee each day than any other beverage — aside from bottled water. Eighty-five percent of past-day coffee drinkers had coffee at breakfast, while 82% drank coffee at home. Coffee drinkers consume an average of nearly three cups a day, NCA adds.
These statistics are all findings from the Fall 2025 National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) report that was conducted by Dig Insights on behalf of the NCA and released ahead of National Coffee Day on Sept. 29. NCA also is set to mark National Coffee Day by hosting a celebratory event on Capitol Hill in conjunction with the bipartisan Congressional Coffee Caucus, it notes.
“Coffee’s staying power as a beloved touchstone in America’s daily lives is remarkable, and its contributions to our health and our economy give Americans even more ‘grounds for celebration’ this National Coffee Day and every day,” said Bill Murray, NCA president and CEO, in a statement.
Overall, coffee popularity has remained steady since 2022, with bottled water typically taking the top spot in the summer months, NCA shares. Cold/iced and frozen blended coffee experienced a summer popularity bump and accounted for 31% of all coffee consumed in the June survey. This is in comparison to 23% in the survey conducted in January.
Specialty coffee continues to reach new heights in popularity, NCA says. The coffee segment was consumed by a record 48% of American adults in the past day — up from 37% in 2021. Meanwhile, traditional coffee is consumed by 41% of American adults each day, compared with 38% in 2021.
The report found that brewing methods have “remained relatively consistent,” with drip brewers being the most popular preparation method. Thirty-eight percent of past-day coffee drinkers had coffee prepared with a drip brewer, while 23% used single-cup brewers. Seventeen percent utilized cold brewing, 11% of past-day coffee drinkers had instant coffee — up from 6% in 2021 — and 19% had ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee, which was an increase from 9% in 2021.
Other key findings of the survey included that grocery stores are the most popular place to purchase coffee for at-home preparation, with 40% of past-day coffee drinkers buying their coffee at a grocery store. Twenty-nine percent purchased their coffee in a mass merchandiser, while 14% bought their coffee online. These figures have remained consistent over the past year, NCA notes.
Additionally, app-based and drive-through purchasing reached record highs, the report showed. An all-time high of 59% of coffee drinkers who bought a coffee out-of-home in the past week purchased it at a drive-through. This percentage is up 9% since 2024. Thirty-six percent ordered coffee through an app, up almost 6% over 2024, NCA adds.
