Sensient Flavors LLC, a unit of Sensient Technologies Corp., introduced a line of natural, true-to-type varietal cherry flavors suitable for food and beverage applications.
As consumers’ taste preferences shift away from intensely sweet and toward tarter flavor profiles, cherries have an opportunity to fill the flavor gap, according to experts.
In recent years, consumers have embraced superfruits, such as pomegranate, acai, blueberry and cranberry, for their antioxidant content. However, certain cherry varietals also rank alongside the more renowned superfruits in terms of antioxidant content. Although the fruit has long been favored as a pie filling and ice cream sundae topper, cherry is still establishing itself as a beverage ingredient, but suppliers say that’s ripe for a change.
Old Orchard Brands, Sparta, Mich., announced a new line of premium juice made from pure tart cherry juice called Very Cherre. The 100 percent juice comes in multi-serve 64-ounce bottles and is available at select grocery and supermarket stores this month with national distribution expected mid-summer. Suggested retail price is $4.99 a bottle.
