Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, a part of Diageo, introduced a line of Woodwork wines that showcase the influence of oak on each varietal. Available in Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varieties, the wines were made with oak staves instead of barrels. The staves provide robust flavors and have a low impact on the environment because they are more efficient in performance than traditional wine barrels, the company says. The oak staves also permitted the winemaker to introduce the oak flavors to the wine in a measurable and repeatable way, allowing for experimentation in a variety of blends, it adds. A 750-ml bottle of each variety retails for approximately $14.99.
