CMI launches interactive can website

Microsite serves as resource of facts and figures

June 17, 2013

The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), Washington, D.C., launched a new website, Cans: The Sustainable & Smart Solution, which promotes the benefits of metal cans as a packaging choice for food and beverages. The interactive microsite, which includes data and videos, focuses on cans’ sustainability and reasons for choosing cans.

“Cans: The Sustainable & Smart Solution will serve as a comprehensive resource for packaging professionals, brand owners, retailers and consumers to learn about the can's premier environmental profile," said Megan Daum, CMI’s vice president of sustainability, in a statement. “U.S. consumers are taking sustainable packaging into account when making their purchasing decisions. This microsite will provide accurate and easy-to-understand information about the can's great sustainability story.”

The new website serves as a resource of facts and figures about the can’s environmental, safety-related and economic advantages. The following are some resource highlights: metal cans are positioned as the most recycled food and beverage container in the United States; cans have the ability to maintain product integrity by keeping out air, retaining intended taste, and being shatter proof and tamper resistant; cans are cost effective due to high recycling rates; seven out of 10 adults prefer sustainable packaging; new manufacturing technologies have allowed for innovations that allow brand owners to customize the can experience; and cans support the U.S. economy by creating 12.47 billion in American wages from jobs related to the can industry, CMI says.

“Sustainability is such an important issue to CMI and its members,” said Robert Budway, president of CMI, in a statement. “We are excited about this initiative to educate the packaging and retailer communities about the environmental benefits of cans. The new website will act as an important educational resource as U.S. can manufacturers continue to develop innovative and environmentally friendly packaging solutions.”
