Fiji Water, Los Angeles, announced that it joined 1% for the Planet, a global alliance of more than 1,100 companies who pledge 1 percent of their annual sales directly to non-profit organizations focused on sustainability. Fiji Water joins the alliance under its parent company, Roll International, which plans to add two more brands to the pledge.

“Becoming a member of 1% for the Planet underscores our deep commitment to sustainability and to preserving our unique Fiji environment,” said John Cochran, president of Fiji Water, in a statement. “The organization provides us with a transparent and verifiable gold standard for our corporate philanthropy efforts, and we hope to become a recognized leader and a powerful force for change among others in the global beverage industry.”

In addition to joining the alliance, Fiji also partnered with the people of Fiji and Conservation International to spearhead a major reforestation project in the country. Planting of the first 250 acres began in October, and another 1,000 acres will be planted in upcoming years. The company also is working to preserve and protect the Sovi Basin, the largest remaining lowland rainforest in the South Pacific.
