Alpina Foods, the U.S. arm of Colombian company Alpina, launched Renew Oat Smoothies. Oat smoothies have been a staple of South American diets for years, but are a new beverage concept to most U.S. consumers, according to the company. Alpina Renew Oat Smoothies are a blend of natural oats and skim milk. According to the American Cancer Society, eating oats also can help lower LDL cholesterol levels, control sugar spikes in diabetics and deter heart disease, Alpina notes. Alpina Renew is available in Original, Hazelnut and Coffee varieties, each of which provides six grams of protein, three grams of fiber and 20 percent of the recommended daily allowance of calcium. The suggested retail price for an 8-ounce carton is $1.49.
