Coffee plays a major part in Valentine’s Day, survey reports

Seventy percent of consumers said coffee will be part of their Valentine’s Day dinners or dates this year, an independent survey by Dunkin’ Donuts, Canton, Mass., reported. Of those, 50 percent indicated that they would prefer to receive a fresh cup of coffee from their sweetheart rather than flowers.

In addition, the survey of 500 Americans found that nearly two-thirds of respondents went out for coffee as a first date. While on a date, 30 percent prefer cappuccino, 28 percent opt for hot coffee, 21 percent choose iced coffee and 21 percent order a latte.

French Vanilla was chosen as the most romantic coffee flavor by 38 percent of respondents followed by mocha, with 16 percent of the vote, and caramel, with 15 percent of the vote.

Dunkin’ Donuts also shared insight on personalities based on coffee preference from Dr. Alan Hirsch, neurological director of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago.

“Based on our work, people who take their coffee black tend to be lively, outgoing and extroverted, thinking more about the present than the future,” Hirsch said in a statement. “People who add sweetener to their coffee are natural leaders, enjoy being in control and expect the best from all. Those who take their coffee with cream are particularly social and engaging. And those who add skim milk to their coffee most enjoy company and usually prefer to draw attention to others versus themselves.”

In honor of Valentine’s Day, Dunkin’ Donuts launched a CupiDD’s Choice Twitter sweepstakes that offers people a chance to win a prize to share with their sweethearts. Today, consumers can tweet @dunkindonuts including the hashtag #CupiDD to tell the brand with whom he or she would choose to share a Dunkin’ Donuts heart-shaped donut. Three winners will be selected randomly from all tweets to receive two $25 Dunkin’ Donuts gift cards — one for the winner and one for his or her date.
