New York-based Vita Coco launched Vita Coco Kids, a new line of coconut water beverages formulated especially for children between the ages of 2 and 8. The new beverages will be available in Apple Island, Paradise Punch and Very Cherry Beach flavors.

All three varieties contain natural, nutrient-dense and electrolyte-filled coconut water, filtered water, natural fruit flavors and vitamin C, the company says. With 35 calories and 8 grams of sugar in each 6-ounce serving, Vita Coco Kids has fewer calories and approximately half the sugar of most other children’s beverages, it adds. In addition, Vita Coco Kids beverages do not contain artificial sweeteners and provide potassium — a nutrient that both children and adults don’t get enough of, according to U.S. Dietary Guidelines.

“My children were the inspiration for the Kids line,” said Vita Coco co-founder Michael Kirban, father to a 2-year-old daughter and an 8-month-old son, in a statement.

“After becoming a parent, it was frustrating to see how many artificial, sugary drinks were being marketed to children their age. I knew Vita Coco could create a healthier drink for kids, and we did.”

Registered dietitian and mother Melissa Halas-Liang added in a statement: “It’s exciting to see more manufacturers bringing lower-calorie, lower-sugar drinks to grocery store shelves. What I like best about coconut water is that it provides potassium and is a healthier option than so many of the drinks flooding our market today.”

Vita Coco Kids is packaged in Tetra Wedge Aseptic cartons by Tetra Pak featuring an attached straw and simple straw insertion for child use, the company says. The drinks will be available at major retailers, including Target and Amazon.com, nationwide starting in July with a suggested retail price of $4.99 for a six-pack.
